Wow, one week left before Christmas Vacation begins! We have a busy week with our Christmas Program practices, Christmas Party, and daily assignments.
This week’s memory schedule is as follows:

This week’s spelling is unit 15. The pretest is Monday and the final test is on Friday. All 5th grade students will take a math test on Tuesday. We will be finishing our Persuasive Letters this week.
This week we will be walking/running the mile on Tuesday. Please bring or wear tennis shoes to school on that day. Thanks!
There will be no hot lunch on Thursday! We will be having our class Christmas party in the afternoon on Thursday, so please be sure to send a lunch to school with your child.
The Christmas party will be held Thursday afternoon! Students should bring their wrapped gifts to school by Thursday morning and place them under the tree. Remember to sign your name on the gift that is brought!
Let me know if you would like to bring a treat to share with the class. Please have the treats ready (cut, popped, frosted, etc.) and at school by noon on Thursday! Thanks to all who have already offered assistance ~ we are planning on a fun-filled afternoon. : )
All students are involved in the Children’s Christmas Program on Saturday, December 15 at 5:30 and 7:00 PM. We will be having a joint practice on Saturday morning, Dec. 15, from 9:00 AM – noon. We are very excited to share the news of Jesus’ birth with you! Please plan to join us for the other special services as well.

Happy December! We have two busy weeks before the Christmas vacation begins – I can’t believe how fast the year is going. Thanks for bringing your children to sing on Sunday morning. The praises the children sang to the Lord were beautiful.

This coming Sunday, December 9, the Jr. Choir sings for the Christmas Cantata during the 8:45 AM service. All students sing for the Children’s Christmas Program on Saturday, December 15 at 5:30 and 7:00 PM. All students are expected to attend the joint rehearsal on Saturday, December 15 from 9:00 AM – 12:00 noon. Plan to join us for the other special services as well!

The book report is due this Fri., Dec. 7. Please remember that the two page summary, paper bag, and book will all be turned in together. The books will be returned before the Christmas vacation begins.
The students may bring their gifts for the class gift exchange the week of Dec. 10. The class party will be Thurs. afternoon, so all gifts should be brought to school by Dec. 13. Please remember that the girls will bring a $5 gift for a girl and the boys will bring a $5 gift for a boy.
We will be having some treats for our Christmas party. Some suggestions are listed: chips, crackers and cheese, popcorn, carrots and dip, fruit, drinks – juice or pop, cookies, candy. Please let me know if you are willing to bring a treat to share with the class.
Please remember that school dismisses at noon on Friday for Teacher Collaboration Day. On Thursday, Dec. 13 there will be no hot lunch!

Nov. 26 Weekly Note

This week we are working on spelling unit 13. The pretest is on Monday and the final test is on Friday. There is no math test this week. The next math test will be Mon., Dec. 3. The students will review for their English test on verbs this week Wed., and the test will be Mon., Dec. 3. The students are currently working on writing a persuasive letter. We are nearing the end of Where the Red Fern Grows. After we finish reading the novel we will be watching the video based on the book. With the Christmas program just around the corner we will be spending some extra time practicing the narrations and songs during the school day.
The 5th grade has a book report due Fri., Dec. 7. The note explaining the project details is attached to this week’s weekly note.
Grades 3-5 sing in the 11:15 AM service this coming Sun., Dec. 2. Please fill out the attached singing note and return to school by Thursday.

The 5th grade will be having the class Christmas party on the afternoon of Thurs., Dec. 13. The students will exchange gifts among each other. We will not exchange names but will play a game to distribute the gifts. Please be sure to label whom the gift is from so the students can thank each other. Happy Thanksgiving! May you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving Day and enjoy God’s blessings of family, friends, food, and fun. May we all be reminded to live each day as a day of ‘Thanks-living’ to the Lord!

This is a shortened school week due to the Thanksgiving break. School will dismiss at noon on Wednesday. I’ll see you again on Monday, November 26. We will be busy for those three weeks preparing for the Children’s Christmas Service on December 15 at 5:30 and 7:00 PM.

The students have memory passages #78, 90, and 91 to recite on Tuesday. There will be no spelling unit this week. All 5th grade students will take a math test on Wednesday. The students did a great job with the tall tale stories. They were very fun to read! We are now beginning to work on a persuasive letter. The science review will be this Monday, and the test on chapter 4 lessons 1-4 will be on Tuesday.

The Scholastic Book Fair was a huge success! Thank you for all the wonderful book donations for the classroom. They are very much appreciated by the students and myself and will be put to great use!

The Scholastic book orders are due Wednesday, November 21. All order forms and payment should be returned to Miss Tjernagel. These orders will arrive before the Christmas vacation begins.

The accreditation visit went well last week Tuesday. If you would like to read more about the accreditation process you can check out the various sites on Mr. Luehring’s page.

This Friday ends the 1st Quarter. How the time is quickly passing! I am enjoying the class very much and look forward to the rest of the year.

We are working on unit 9 in spelling this week. The pretest is Monday and the final test is on Friday. This week we are finishing writing our ‘how-to’ articles. We have been learning about nouns in English class. We will work on a review this Thursday and the test will be next week Tuesday, Oct. 30. All 5th graders will take a math test this week Wednesday.

Please look for a note later this week concerning the volunteer choir for the Joint Reformation Service on Sunday, Oct. 28. Thank you to those who are able to join us in raising a song to the Lord!

Please note that all parents and volunteers who wish to drive or attend field trips need to take the “Keeping Our Children Safe” class. This class will be offered Wednesday, Oct. 24 and Wednesday, Oct. 31 at 3:30 PM by registration only. Please let me know if you plan to attend either of these meetings. Registration needs to be in by noon the day of the class or the class will not be offered. Thank you.

Please turn in all Box Tops labels by this Friday, Oct. 26. The class that collects the most Box Tops will earn money to spend for classroom items. Go 5th grade!

Wow, it’s already mid-October! We’ve been having lots of fun and the time has been flying. I’m enjoying the cooler fall weather very much.
This week there are no memory passages due on Tues. or Thurs. The 5th graders are having their first catechism test on lessons 1-13 this Tuesday. They will be required to write the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Commandments. Hymn 429: 1-2 will be recited on Friday.
This week we are on spelling unit 8. The pre-test will be held Monday and the final test on Friday. Great job last week on some wonderful test grades! Keep up the super work. : )
This week we are working on capitalizing proper nouns and learning abbreviations in English. We continue to work on writing the how-to articles. All students will take math test 5 on Wednesday. We finished reading Hatchet by Gary Paulsen last week. The students really enjoyed the book and are looking forward to the next novel.
On Monday we enjoyed an all-school presentation by the Wildlife Associates. Be sure to ask your child all about it!
A note was sent home Monday with your scheduled Parent/Teacher Conf. time. Please be sure to mark the date and time on your calendar. A reminder will also be sent with the 1st Quarter report cards.
Notes were also sent home to families for whom we have no record of taking the “Keeping Our Children Safe” class. Be sure to let me know if this is an error. Please check the note for the added times that the class will be offered.

This week we are doing the review unit 6 in spelling. The spelling test will use words the students have learned in units 1-5. There will be a math test for all students on Friday. Next week we will have a science test on chapter 2.

Friday, October 5 is the Harvest Festival at Apostles! Plan to join us for a night of fun and games! Bring your family and friends!

The volleyball mixer is this Saturday, October 6 at Apostles! Come meet new friends and have some fun playing volleyball.

The Jr. Choir sings in the 11:15 AM service this Sunday, October 8. Please remember to mark your calendar for this busy weekend!

Weekly Update

Happy fall to everyone! I love the cooler weather and color changes that fall brings. I am very interested to see the changes that occur in a California fall! It’s very exciting for me to have so many things be new and to see them for the first time. With all the changes that occur in this life what a blessing it is for us to know that our God never changes!

This week we are taking the Terra Nova tests. Please make sure that your child is at school promptly in order to stay on the testing schedule. It would be best to try to schedule any dr., dentist, or other appointments after 3:00 for this week. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation!

Due to the testing this week the class schedule and homework assignments will be lighter. Students are allowed to work on the assigned test and check their work on that test during the allotted time. There will be no piano lessons for 5th grade this week due to the testing! Lessons will resume the following week.

A new memory work and hymn calendar was sent home for October. Please be sure to post the calendar and refer to it daily. Please let me know if you would like an extra calendar for you and your child!

The students will take the unit 5 spelling test on Friday, a chapter math test on Friday, and they took their first English test on Monday.

A note was sent home on Monday for the class “Keeping our Children Safe”. Please refer to the note and choose the date and time that works best for you.

Progress reports will be sent home this week Friday! A sign-up form concerning Parent/Teacher Conferences will be sent with this report. Please be sure to check your child’s graded paper folder each Friday for their daily work. All students need to have a parent sign the graded paper folder each week!

Please return your earthquake form and kit to school with your child this week! We know that the Lord is always with us. It is still very important to be prepared and have these items at school should an emergency situation arise. Earthquake forms were sent home on Monday for students who have not returned their kits to school!

Sept. 17 Weekly News

Smile!!! School pictures will be taken this Wednesday, September 19! Order forms need to be returned to Miss Tjernagel by Wed. if you will be ordering pictures. All students will have their picture taken regardless of whether pictures are ordered or not. Please let me know if you have any questions!

Book orders from Box Top are due this Friday, September 21. Please return any order forms and payment to Miss Tjernagel. Thanks!

Chapel offering envelopes are attached to the weekly note. Offerings can be returned to school any day during the week. II Corinthians 9:7 “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

Memory passages will be recited Tuesday and Thursday. The Tuesday passages are #44 and the 2nd Commandment. Thursday passages are #30, 46, and 63. Hymn 280:1-2 will be recited by Friday. Please note that memory work is recited at the beginning of the day. Students should be prepared to recite upon arrival at school!

This week we are on spelling unit 4. A pretest is taken each Monday, and those students who correctly spell all the words are not required to take the test on Friday. All words spelled incorrectly on the pretest are written a specified number of times to help prepare for the final test. These spelling corrections are due each Friday!

The students did a great job on their personal narrative stories! It was enjoyable to find out more about each student. This week we will be working on some fun story starter ideas. The 5th grade will take their first English test on Monday, September 24! The test will cover the four types of sentences, complete and simple subjects and predicates, and quotations. A review for the test will take place on Wed., Sept. 19.

All 5th grade students will take another math test this Thurs., Sept. 20. The students will take a test after every five lessons, usually occurring once a week. A review will be sent home with the students on Wednesday. I was very pleased with the results from the first test – keep up the great work! : )

Sept. 10 Weekly News

We are now entering week number three of the school year! The students and I are settling into our routines and getting accustomed to filling our minds with much knowledge! I continue to enjoy learning more about the class and each individual student.

Please look for a chapel offering envelope which will be attached to the weekly note each week. The envelopes can be returned to school any day during the week.

Thanks to all the students and parents for participating in our first singing opportunity of the year. The students did a wonderful job using their voices to praise the Lord! Thank you, parents, for seeing the importance of bringing your children to this service.

Please remember to send the earthquake kits back to school by Monday, Sept. 17. The yellow information form should be included with the bag of supplies. Also, please have all hard cover textbooks covered by this Friday, Sept. 14. Thanks much!

This week’s memory work is due on Tuesday and Thursday. Hymn 225:1-2 is due on Friday. It is very important that the students do some work on memorization at home! Thanks for your help in this important matter! We practice at school during the day, but some extra time will be required of each student. The students recite their memory work at the very beginning of the day, so please remind your child to review before arriving at school. Students are welcomed and encouraged to recite their memory work before the due date! Please also remind your child to bring the catechism and hymnal back to school each day.

The students will have their first math test this Wednesday! There will be a math test after each five lessons, and the test will cover all material previously studied. A review sheet will be sent home the day before each test. Please feel free to help your child review the material and prepare for the test.

This week we are finishing the first chapter in science. We have been studying cells and what they do, how body systems transport materials, and how bones, muscles, and nerves work together. The students will have a test this Thursday. This first test will be a guided activity completed together as a class.

The 5th graders have been working on a personal narrative story during writing. Several students will share their work for each style of writing. The students will be reading their story to the class this Friday.

This week during reading class we will begin reading the novel “Hatchet” by Gary Paulsen. Gary was born in Minneapolis, MN and attended school in Bemidji, MN. This is especially interesting to me as a native Minnesotan! : ) We will be reading the novel over the next few weeks.

Please note that school dismisses at noon this Friday, Sept. 14! The teachers will be having collaboration meetings during the afternoon.

Welcome to 5th Grade

Welcome back to school! It’s a wonderful blessing to have a class full of excited students, and parents who are supportive and eager to help in so many ways! I am so excited to join the Apostles faculty and look forward to working together with each of you as we serve our Savior! We are glad to welcome two new students to our class this year and all the returning students as well! May God bless us with many fun-filled, enriching days!

This week in school we will be getting an introduction to the various subjects. We will be reviewing material previously learned and getting our minds ready for new things. School and classroom rules will be reviewed daily. When we work together we will be able to accomplish great things!
