Weekly Update

Happy fall to everyone! I love the cooler weather and color changes that fall brings. I am very interested to see the changes that occur in a California fall! It’s very exciting for me to have so many things be new and to see them for the first time. With all the changes that occur in this life what a blessing it is for us to know that our God never changes!

This week we are taking the Terra Nova tests. Please make sure that your child is at school promptly in order to stay on the testing schedule. It would be best to try to schedule any dr., dentist, or other appointments after 3:00 for this week. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation!

Due to the testing this week the class schedule and homework assignments will be lighter. Students are allowed to work on the assigned test and check their work on that test during the allotted time. There will be no piano lessons for 5th grade this week due to the testing! Lessons will resume the following week.

Memory Work and Hymn recitations are due Tues., Thurs., and Friday. Tuesday passages - #30, 46, 63

Thursday passages - #28, 47, 51

Friday Hymn – 457:1-2

A new memory work and hymn calendar was sent home for October. Please be sure to post the calendar and refer to it daily. Please let me know if you would like an extra calendar for you and your child!

The students will take the unit 5 spelling test on Friday, a chapter math test on Friday, and they took their first English test on Monday.

A note was sent home on Monday for the class “Keeping our Children Safe”. Please refer to the note and choose the date and time that works best for you.

Progress reports will be sent home this week Friday! A sign-up form concerning Parent/Teacher Conferences will be sent with this report. Please be sure to check your child’s graded paper folder each Friday for their daily work. All students need to have a parent sign the graded paper folder each week!

Please return your earthquake form and kit to school with your child this week! We know that the Lord is always with us. It is still very important to be prepared and have these items at school should an emergency situation arise. Earthquake forms were sent home on Monday for students who have not returned their kits to school!

Please be sure to have all school hardcover books covered by Friday,

Sept. 28! Notes will be sent home to those who have not covered their books.

Have a great last week of September!

This week we are on spelling unit 4. A pretest is taken each Monday, and those students who correctly spell all the words are not required to take the test on Friday. All words spelled incorrectly on the pretest are written a specified number of times to help prepare for the final test. These spelling corrections are due each Friday!

The students did a great job on their personal narrative stories! It was enjoyable to find out more about each student. This week we will be working on some fun story starter ideas. The 5th grade will take their first English test on Monday, September 24! The test will cover the four types of sentences, complete and simple subjects and predicates, and quotations. A review for the test will take place on Wed., Sept. 19.

All 5th grade students will take another math test this Thurs., Sept. 20. The students will take a test after every five lessons, usually occurring once a week. Sept. 10 Weekly News

We are now entering week number three of the school year! The students and I are settling into our routines and getting accustomed to filling our minds with much knowledge! I continue to enjoy learning more about the class and each individual student.

Please look for a chapel offering envelope which will be attached to the weekly note each week. The envelopes can be returned to school any day during the week.

Thanks to all the students and parents for participating in our first singing opportunity of the year. The students did a wonderful job using their voices to praise the Lord! Thank you, parents, for seeing the importance of bringing your children to this service.

Please remember to send the earthquake kits back to school by Monday, Sept. 17. The yellow information form should be included with the bag of supplies. Also, please have all hard cover textbooks covered by this Friday, Sept. 14. Thanks much!

This week’s memory work is due on Tuesday and Thursday. Hymn 225:1-2 is due on Friday. It is very important that the students do some work on memorization at home! Thanks for your help in this important matter! We practice at school during the day, but some extra time will be required of each student. The students recite their memory work at the very beginning of the day, so please remind your child to review before arriving at school. Students are welcomed and encouraged to recite their memory work before the due date! Please also remind your child to bring the catechism and hymnal back to school each day.

The students will have their first math test this Wednesday! There will be a math test after each five lessons, and the test will cover all material previously studied. A review sheet will be sent home the day before each test. Please feel free to help your child review the material and prepare for the test.

This week we are finishing the first chapter in science. We have been studying cells and what they do, how body systems transport materials, and how bones, muscles, and nerves work together. The students will have a test this Thursday. This first test will be a guided activity completed together as a class.

The 5th graders have been working on a personal narrative story during writing. Several students will share their work for each style of writing. The students will be reading their story to the class this Friday.

This week during reading class we will begin reading the novel “Hatchet” by Gary Paulsen. Gary was born in Minneapolis, MN and attended school in Bemidji, MN. This is especially interesting to me as a native Minnesotan! : ) We will be reading the novel over the next few weeks.

Please note that school dismisses at noon this Friday, Sept. 14! The teachers will be having collaboration meetings during the afternoon.

Have a wonderful week!
